The FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation conference will provide a neutral forum for representatives of FAO Members, producer organizations, research and academic institutions, development agencies, civil society organizations and private sector bodies to engage in dialogues on innovations and pathways to efficiently produce more nutritious, safe and accessible animal source foods with a reduced environmental footprint, and contribute to vibrant local and diversified livestock systems that are more resilient to shocks and disruptions.
This conference will be held around the four main themes of "better production, better nutrition, better environment, and better life", and will set up side events with four themes - "One Health, One Welfare", "Investment Partnership in the Livestock Sector", "Science and Innovation in the Livestock Sector", and "International Year of Camels". The Origin of One Health and One WelfareOne health, also known as integrated health, originated in the late 20th century and was first proposed by veterinarians. In 2010, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and the World Health Organization (WHO) reached a "FAO OIE WHO" cooperation in Hanoi, Vietnam, aimed at exploring the shared responsibilities of animals, humans, and the environment, creating a cross disciplinary and cross departmental cooperation system to address animal and public health crises, And established the GLEWS for major animal diseases.
In March 2022, the United Nations Environment Assembly passed a resolution on the relationship between animal welfare, the environment, and sustainable development, recognizing that animal welfare helps to address environmental challenges, promote 'one health', and achieve sustainable development goals.
'One Health' is a comprehensive and unified approach aimed at sustainably balancing and enhancing the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. It acknowledges that the health of humans, domesticated and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) is closely linked and interdependent. At present, cooperation mainly focuses on three major priorities, namely zoonotic influenzas, antimicrobial resistance, and rabies prevention and control.
'One Health' is the main approach to addressing the complex health challenges faced by society, including ecosystem degradation, food system collapse, infectious diseases, and antibiotic resistance. As an extension of the 'One Health' approach, 'One Welfare' promotes various connections between animal welfare and human well-being, as well as environmentally friendly animal farming systems. This method mobilizes multiple departments, disciplines, and communities from different levels of society to work together to promote well-being, address threats to health and ecosystems, and meet collective needs for clean water, energy and air, safety, and nutritious food. Action is taken to address climate change and promote sustainable development.
